Stay in your lane!

How do you like your new car?

Have you looked at new cars lately?  Just one step below self driving most of the new models have driving and safety accessories that keep the car in the correct lane,  slow down as traffic slows down,  and backup cameras to keep you from backing into things.   Well we bought one and it’s fabulous,  with all these gadgets and gizmos,  plus more than 44 mpg.

This Saturday on A Firm Foundation for Life we are at the shop of Sylvania Auto Restyling and Glass,  just off the Central Ave. strip to talk about all this technology,  plus leather interiors,  sunroofs,  heated seats,  glass replacement and all the other after market options that can be added if the car you purchase doesn’t have these options factory installed.   We will be joined in the shop with Les and Mike Breininger,  owners of Sylvania Auto Restyling & Glass to enlighten us on this work.

The program starts at 9:00 am. on Saturday can be heard again Sundays at 7:00 am.  on 1370 WSPD,  streamed live @ wspd.com remotely on your I-phone with the I-Heart radio media app.  Many of these car options we discuss can be viewed on our Facebook Live @ “A Firm Foundation for Life”.

Memorial Day Weekend!

Summer has arrived

Summer is here both on the calendar and with our weather.  Blooms are abundant and we have been mowing grass twice a week.   This Saturday on A Firm Foundation for Life,  a holiday weekend,  but not for N. W. Ohio’s most trusted hosts.   Imagine owning a small business,  then try to imagine owning two different small businesses in the same household.   Hear about that Saturday as we welcome for the first time to the program,  Lisa Palmer,  owner Calico, Sage, and Thyme,  a Bowling Green landmark since 1975,  Lisa has owned it now for two years.  Brett Palmer,  owner,  Jim Palmer Excavating,  (JPX),  since 1961,  Brett has been doing this all his life,  but the work today is much more complex,  serious,  and in many cases risking work.   So Saturday you can hear about,  flowers,  tea,  herbs, gifts,  artist consignments,  tractors,  backhoes, excavators, mini equipment, dirt,  stone, topsoil,  sewers,  and water lines.   A full program with something for everyone . . . .

Rick and Jackie take their hats off to all who have served this Country,  including Jackie’s father,  Tom,  all her uncles,  and Rick’s uncle Herb a decorated WWII veteran still living in Florida.

A Firm Foundation for life is available on several platforms,  Saturday at 9:00 am. or Sunday at 7:00 am.  live radio,  1370 WSPD,  streamed @ wspd.com remotely with the I-Heart media app on I-Heart radio,  and on Facebook live @  “A Firm Foundation for Life”

No yellow flowers in this lawn!!!

Friday, May 18th, 2018

How good does it look?

It’s that time of the year,  cut the grass two to three times per week!    Especially if it’s a TruGreen lawn,  take a look at this!

Joining N. W. Ohio’s most trusted hosts this Saturday and Sunday on A Firm Foundation for Life,  your lawn,  what does it look like?  Just a new father this week,  Adam Knieriem,  your local TruGreen expert,  will leave the new born with Mom and be live in studio with us.   For sure no watering of any lawns in N. W. Ohio,  in fact if it stays cool might be weeks before we have to add water to our lawns.   Crabgrass preventer,  and those ugly yellow flowers in our lawns,  that’s top priority right now.

Tune in Saturday at 9:00 am. and/or Sunday at 7:00 am. to the region’s number one radio station  1370 WSPD,  or pick up the live stream at:  wspd.com remotely on your I-Phone with the I-Heart radio media app.  And again this week,  on Facebook live@  “A Firm Foundation for Life”.   You can also watch Jackie’s face peel on Facebook live from last week’s show with our friends from Anders Dermatology.

Our lawn has never looked so good,  attached is a picture taken this evening!

The End

Completing five (5) years now, visiting daily a local longterm care facility has given me a whole new perspective on life.   Along with just ordinary bygone days important holidays have come and gone — we’ve even had birthday parties — seasons change,  and the calendar turns over another new year.   I have gotten to know many residents along the way that have since passed; in fact, my Mother has had no less than seven (7) roommates.   Along this journey I have written to you about the many residents that seldom, if ever, had a visitor.  I might run into one of their family members around town and remark how I had just seen their father, mother, grandfather, or grandmother at the Home. Some would utter how they hadn’t been there yet this year and, in shock, I would exclaim, ‘It’s July!’

I am writing you to let you know — all is not dead!   Sometimes you witness  a heartwarming story that stands above all the other stories in which you struggle to find hope or meaning.  A large, anonymous local family recently had the Patriarch and Matriarch of their family residing at the Home   unable to care for themselves or each other.  There is no question this was a hard decision to make but this seemed like the right one.   The other family members of this large family: Older adult children, adult grandchildren, younger great-grandchildren,  and all others related by marriage, were at the Home regularly, daily,  if not for every meal time.  Sometime later, the Patriarch was the first to pass on. This left the Matriarch at the Home alone,  sometimes confused, cranky, and generally not content in her situation.

The participation of the rest of the family and others related increased. It seemed from across the hall, that the Matriarch was seldom without some relative there with her.   Certainly,  someone in the rest of the family was with her during meal time.   This large family coordinated their times so that any burden was shared by all who participated.    As we watched, months passed and the deserved attention continued, not with an attitude of obligation, but with obvious kindness, joy, care, and love for this remaining Matriarch.

Now the end is near, nearly everyone in the family is there together for the Matriarch. This is the time to share all the things you want the Matriarch to take with her about the feelings you have for  her.   She seems unconscious, but experts have told us that hearing is the last thing to go.  Assume she is hearing everything said around her, talk about all the pleasant memories,  be specific!  What was the favorite dish she made for you that you intend to continue in the family tradition?   Where was this memory created? Who was there? What was the weather at that time?  What were you doing that makes this such a pleasant memory?  Share all this with her!  What else do you have at a time like this? And, what do you want her to take when she crosses over? Give her the security of release!  It’s okay to let go!     Why not sing her favorite hymn? How comforting is it for her to have the whole family with her, near the end of life, singing her favorite church hymn?  End times, with this spirit in the room, can comfort the living, too.  It helps ease the deep grief you’ll feel from the loss.

What else is there?  I wish there were more. The end!

More Water!

Thursday, April 19th, 2018

Hey get a load of this!

You have heard recent news about steel and aluminum and tariffs and how important these industries are to the security of our country!   No one ever talks about cement,  the main ingredient in concrete,  the building block of our country.  Very little cement is manufactured in our country anymore,  most of it is imported,  in this area from Canada,  some from Mexico,  and some from very far away.  Where is all the cement going to come from if we re-build the Nation’s infrastructure?

This Saturday at 9:00 am. and Sunday at 7:00 am.  N. W. Ohio’s most trusted hosts welcome back to the program,  Jordan Schmeltz,  one of the principles in Palmer Brothers Concrete,  with plants in Bowling Green,  Fremont,  Tiffin, and Napoleon.   Jordan has grown up in the business and brings wealth of knowledge to this important subject you need to hear about!

A Firm Foundation for Life is heard locally on 1370 WSPD,  can be streamed on the internet at:  <wspd.com>  remotely on your I-Phone with the I-Heart radio media app.  or you can watch the interview on Facebook Live @   “A Firm Foundation for Life”

Pictured with Rick and Jackie from last week’s program is Dr. Tim Murnen,  coordinator of Literacy in the Park which happens Saturday at 10:00 am. at the Perry Field House at B.G.S.U.  Nationally famous author,  Don Tate will be there to do presentations during the event.

Springtime in Ohio?

Friday, April 13th, 2018

Is it finally here?   Springtime in Ohio

74 degrees as I write this note to you!   Just yesterday it was snowing,   and everyone is tired of the lousy spring weather thus far,  but the change is here,  and Saturday is Kiwanis Pancake Day at Bowling Green High School.   $6 all you can eat pancakes and sausage,  7:00 am. till 1:00 pm. . .  N. W. Ohio’s most trusted hosts will be there early,  (first to be served),  then it’s off to the studio to talk about a very big family event coming up on Saturday April 21 at the Field House at B.G.S.U.,  “Literacy in the Park”.   In just over 10 years this event has grown to one of the biggest single day events in Bowling Green.

Joining Rick and Jackie in studio Dr. Tim Murnen,  one of the event coordinators,  and special guest via the phone children’s author and illustrator from Austin, Don Tate.   It will  be interesting to find out from these experts,  in today’s high tech world, literacy is still an important skill,  that parents and other family members can instill in children at a young age!

This Saturday’s program is heard on the #1 station in the region, 1370 WSPD,  at 9:00 am. on Saturday and again on Sunday at 7:00 am.  Remotely on your I-Phone with the I-Heart Media app., and streamed on your computer at:  <wspd.com>.  You can now join in on Facebook Live @  “A Firm Foundation for Life”

Last Saturday was our 16th Masters broadcast,  we wish we could have joined the champion on the 18th green like we have done in the past,  maybe next year!
